The Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia held at Spruce Street was established in 1833 by Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting (Hicksite) out of the Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia. Joint Committee to Raise Funds for the Relief of Virginia Friends who Suffered from the Devastation of Civil War.

The Joint Committee included members appointed by the three Philadelphia Hicksite meetings to raise money through voluntary subscription to assist in the relief of Quakers in Virginia who had suffered heavy losses in the Civil War, particularly as a result of Sherman's march.
